Selangor: A sea of change after 3.5 years under Pakatan Rakyat

In a country still governed by UMNO, the PR-led Selangor state government has defied odds in serving the rakyat by implementing changes that matter.

“Firstly, they took over from Barisan Nasional. So really, the little incremental improvements must be credited”, said Haris Ibrahim, the president of the Malaysian Civil Liberties Movement (MLCM).

The term “incremental” is an understatement, seeing how the state government provides free treated water for households in Selangor and introduced a new policy for residential leases. For a 99-year lease renewal, a household is charged a minimal premium of only RM1000.

“A member of the public at least has water and do not have to worry about having being pushed out of their leased property when the lease has run out”, comments Derek Fernandez, a member of the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) on these improvements.

In addressing transparency, the local government has formed independent audit and governance committee to weed out malpractices and corruption. In a country stained by corruption, this is a pivotal start – pivotal in channeling our nation’s resources towards the betterment of the people rather than into the pockets of politicians.

The state government has also looked into providing free transportation services for the disabled and free medical aid for the poor.
